Child mortality is a huge problem globally with The United Nations Inter-Agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME) 2019, suggesting that 5.3 million children under the age of five died in 2019. Newborn deaths account for 47% of all deaths in children aged under 5 globally. Healthcare Professionals, and parents, particularly in rural Africa, often do not have access to reliable scales and, at worst, lack access to scales completely. Poor access to scales, and the inability to accurately measure and monitor the weight of babies compromises neonatal health, life chances, and ultimately their survival. At ROOTS we are working with our partners in Ghana (African Foundation for Premature babies and Neonatal Care [AFPNC]) to enable us to incorporate a human-centred approach to the design and development of affordable, reliable, and user-friendly scales for use with neonates and infants.
